Shoe of the Day - April 25th

Nike Huarache 2K4
People's Opinions on the Huarache:
"Never, to my knowledge, has nike spent so much time and money advertising any one product. After wearing the shoe, though, you'll realize that every dollar both you and nike spent was absolutely worth it.
The Hurache 2k4 embodies all the flagship nike qualities. The shoe is very stylish, a performance machine, comes in nearly two dozen colorways and in many different materials. The shoe is also customizable on nikeid.com, and has been a huge hit even with its premium pricetag ($125 retail, $135 on nikeid).
So does the shoe deserve all the promotions and lofty pricetag? as much as any basketball shoe ive ever played in. Being a lightning fast point guard, the shoe is exactly what i needed: it's the lightest shoe on the market at only 14.4 ounces (anorexic compared to the generic basketball shoe these days), and the low-profile and extremely responsive zoom air cushioning throughout the shoe really lets you feel the court. The traction is also top-notch, in fact the great jordan xiv is the only shoe with better traction than the huarache 2k4 in my opinion.
Why is it called Huarache, you ask? Huarache, in spanish means "sandal", and that is what the shoe is supposed to replicate. like sandals, the huarache is comfortable, but sacrifices material for quality so as to create a light shoe with all the performance standards. so in the case, less is definately more, and quality defeats quantity.
One thing that the huarache sacrifices most importantly, though, through the preservation of materials is ankle support. the thin strap locks down the foot, but the back ankle area is composed of one piece leather (or in my case suede, as I testes the black/silver colorway). the result is excellent response on guick cuts to the hoop, but the quick stops come at a high price if you dont center yourself for the landing. there were only a couple instances where i hurt my ankle though, and neither of them were serious enough to keep me out of the game. if you have weak ankles and expect more from your kicks, you might want to tread elsewhere.
Back to the pros. the zoom air cushioning is as good as in any shoe ive ever worn, and is not put to better use in any other basketball shoe. the use of air-sole cushioning in the shoe would not fit as well and probably augment the weight, but is especially nowhere near as responsive and cushioned as zoom air. i actually felt faster in these shoes, and often forgot they were on my feet.
The huaraches are some of the best performers ive ever had. though the price is lofty, you cant to better for even $150 and they outperform all the recent jordans that retial at around $175. if you take bball seriously, you'll find nothing better. "
